Northern Piedmont Federal Credit Union to acquire State Financial Literacy Award


Culpeper-based Northern Piedmont Federal Credit Union has a 2nd Place award in the State Desjardins Youth Financial Education Awards for credit unions won. Desjardins Awards, sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union League and Credit Union National Association, honor credit unions for their commitment to teaching personal finance basics to young people.

The Credit Union was honored for his work on financial education and free workshops on financial literacy in 10 schools and public recognition through various service organizations. His "Smart Start" workshops, young people learn about budgeting, saving, credit reports, credit, housing loans and the understanding and credit conditions. It also works with an advisory board of the Youth Account holders adolescents aged 13 to 18, in research and development of products and services that appeal to the members of adolescence.

"Our fund sees a real need in our community for financial education and we strive to meet these needs," said Marsha Borland, President and CEO of Northern Piedmont Federal Credit Union. "Too many teenagers and young adults do not have the skills in your personal finances they need to successfully manage their finances and avoid financial missteps that lead many crippling debt burden."

The award is in honor of Alphonse Desjardins, founder of the North American Fund, which was the first "created Caisse populaire" (People's Bank named) in Quebec in 1900 and helped establish the first American credit union in New Hampshire in 1909 . Desjardins is an ardent advocate of the value of saving the education of children, and he promoted the idea that savings in school programs (caisses scolaires).
